Julia joined Typeshop in 2022, the same year I joined the Graphic Design department. Typeshop is a graphic design printing shop run by Ed and Julia, almost every giant poster, fabric print, screen print, and RISO in this building wouldn’t be possible without the daily maintenance from our dearest technicians.
Beyond machine maintenance, Julia also spends a lot of time teaching students and student technicians how to use all the resources in the shop. Of course, I’m one of them. I learned laser cutting, plate making, screen printing, and RISO printing from Julia, and a lot of my projects (including this one) wouldn’t have been possible without her. As someone who is always behind the scenes, Julia made me curious: where did she learn all her knowledge with the press, what brought her from California to Providence, and how does she see the future of the printing scene?
